About the Role

Harper May is working with a London-based property and construction business that has grown steadily over the past decade through careful project delivery and client relationships. The group manages a mixed portfolio of residential and commercial schemes across the capital, with revenues in the £50-80m range. The business is founder-led, profitable, and now at a point where a more formal finance structure is needed to support planned expansion and institutional investor conversations. They are now seeking a Finance Director to build the financial framework the business requires for the next phase.

The Role
Reporting to the Chief Executive, you will lead the finance function and sit at the Board table. This is a hands-on role that combines strategic financial planning with day-to-day operational control. You will oversee all aspects of financial management-from project-level accounting through to group consolidation, funding relationships, and statutory reporting.

  • Build and execute financial strategy aligned with the board's growth and investment objectives
  • Own project costing, margin tracking, and WIP accounting across the active scheme portfolio
  • Manage group cash flow, working capital, and relationships with lenders and funders
  • Establish financial controls, governance frameworks, and risk reporting suitable for a growing business
  • Lead budgeting, forecasting, and scenario planning for new ventures and acquisitions
  • Manage year-end audit, tax compliance, and statutory reporting
  • Build and lead a small finance team, embedding systems and processes

What we are looking for

  • ACA, ACCA, or CIMA qualified
  • Solid experience as a Finance Manager or senior finance lead within property development or construction
  • Practical knowledge of project accounting, WIP mechanics, and development cash cycles
  • Comfort with Board-level communication and stakeholder management
  • Track record of building or improving finance capability and team in a growing business
  • Commercial mindset-able to balance rigour with pragmatism
