Executive Finance Leadership Recruitment

Harper May provides specialist executive finance recruitment services for organisations seeking high-impact financial leadership. We specialise in placing Chief Financial Officers (CFOs), Finance Directors, Financial Controllers, Heads of Finance, and other senior finance leadership roles. Our data-driven search methodology connects businesses with candidates who possess the strategic vision, commercial acumen, and operational expertise necessary to scale and succeed.

What Finance Leadership Roles Does Harper May Recruit For?
We partner with organisations to secure leadership across the entire financial spectrum, ensuring each hire is both a cultural and technical fit.To help you identify the right level of support, we focus on four core pillars: Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) are best for board-level strategy, capital allocation, and M&A, specifically for businesses scaling towards fundraising or public markets. Finance Directors (FDs) provide operational control and team management for growth-phase finance functions. Financial Controllers ensure financial integrity, compliance, and robust reporting through internal controls. Finally, our Fractional CFOs offer agile, part-time strategic guidance tailored for startups and SMEs requiring senior expertise without a full-time headcount.

Why Partner with Harper May for Executive Search?
We move beyond traditional database-led recruiting to deliver a bespoke, rigorous search process that guarantees results.

Bespoke Market Mapping: We conduct a dedicated, active market map for every assignment to identify passive talent, rather than relying on active job seekers.

Proven Sector Expertise: Our consultants have deep-rooted experience across Technology, FinTech, Real Estate, Private Equity, and SaaS.

Data-Driven Methodology: We utilise rigorous assessment techniques to ensure candidates can demonstrate measurable business outcomes.

Cultural Alignment: We prioritise long-term retention by evaluating technical capability alongside leadership style and cultural compatibility.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. How do I decide if I need a CFO or a Finance Director? Generally, a CFO is a strategic partner focused on fundraising, board-level strategy, and capital markets. In contrast, a Finance Director focuses on the operational "engine room," managing reporting and day-to-day team scaling.2. What is the advantage of a Fractional CFO? A Fractional CFO provides businesses with high-level strategic leadership on a part-time or project basis. This is ideal for startups or SMEs that need senior oversight without the cost of a full-time executive salary.3. Does Harper May recruit for PE-backed businesses? Yes. We have a dedicated practice for Private Equity-backed finance recruitment, specialising in hiring leaders who can deliver the rapid growth and rigorous reporting cycles required by PE firms.4. How long does an executive finance search typically take? While every assignment is unique, a thorough search typically takes between 8 to 12 weeks. This includes the initial briefing, comprehensive market mapping, interviewing, and the final selection process. We prioritise quality and fit over speed to ensure long-term retention.5. How does Harper May handle confidential or sensitive executive searches? We understand that executive hires are often sensitive. We provide a completely confidential search process, ensuring your organisation's identity is protected until the appropriate stage. We use discreet approaches to engage passive candidates who would not typically apply via public channels.6. Why use a finance-specialist recruiter instead of a generalist agency? Finance is a highly technical field. A generalist agency may not grasp the nuances between IFRS and UK GAAP, or the specific SaaS metrics required for a modern CFO. By partnering with a specialist firm like Harper May, you are working with consultants who understand the technical, regulatory, and commercial complexities of the finance function.

Industry Finance Recruitment

Industry Finance Recruitment
At Harper May, we recognize that finance is not one-size-fits-all. A Finance Director in a SaaS company requires a vastly different skillset—and knowledge of different KPIs—than a Financial Controller in a Real Estate firm or a CFO in a FinTech startup. We provide sector-focused finance recruitment to ensure you secure leaders who understand your specific commercial landscape.
Our Industry Specialisms
We have built deep talent networks across multiple high-growth and established sectors. Finance Hiring Solutions

Hiring the right finance professional is rarely just about filling a vacancy. More often, it’s about solving a wider business challenge. Whether that’s improving reporting, supporting growth, preparing for investment, or stabilising a team during change, the right hire can have a lasting impact across the business. At Harper May, our Finance Hiring Solutions are designed to support businesses at every stage of their journey. We work closely with clients to understand not just the role, but the wider context behind it — what the business is trying to achieve, where the gaps are, and what success looks like after the hire is made.Start the Conversation with our specialist team today to explore how our tailored hiring frameworks can solve your most complex human capital challenges.
A Practical Approach to Finance Hiring
No two businesses hire in the same way. A high-growth company preparing for investment will have very different needs to an established organisation focused on improving controls or reporting accuracy. That’s why we don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, we work with you to identify the most effective route to hire, whether that’s Strategic CFO executive search, retained recruitment, contingent hiring, or Part-time strategic finance search. Our role is to bring clarity to the process. We help define what “good” looks like, benchmark the market using National financial market data, and ensure the role is positioned in a way that attracts the right level of candidate. We also focus heavily on long-term fit. Technical skills matter, but so does commercial awareness, communication, and the ability to operate within your business environment. We ensure all candidates meet the Official professional accounting standards required to succeed in the London market.
Supporting Finance Leadership and Specialist Hiring
We support a wide range of finance roles, from operational hires through to board-level leadership. For senior appointments such as CFO, Finance Director or Head of Finance, our search approach focuses on identifying individuals who can contribute beyond their immediate remit. By taking the time to understand the underlying issue, we are able to recommend candidates who are equipped to deliver real outcomes.
Market Insight and Candidate Quality
Access to the right talent is only part of the equation. Strategic Finance & Transformation Recruitment

In the volatile economic climate of 2026, a static finance function is a commercial liability. Strategic Finance & Transformation Recruitment is the specialized discipline of staffing for change, scale, and recovery. Harper May identifies and secures the project-led finance talent required to navigate high-stakes corporate milestones—from distressed turnarounds to public market debuts. We provide the "change agents" who bridge the gap between legacy operations and future-proofed enterprise value across London and the UK.Start the Conversation with our specialist transformation consultants today to discuss how the right leadership can safeguard your firm's strategic objectives.
The Architecture of Transformation in London and the UK
Transformation is no longer an isolated event; it is a continuous requirement for firms in London and the UK. Whether your organization is integrating an acquisition, migrating to a cloud-based ERP, or preparing for an exit, the success of the project rests entirely on the quality of the project leadership. Standard recruitment models often fail in these scenarios because they prioritize steady-state experience over "transformation grit."At Harper May, we focus on the "Project Lifecycle" of finance. We understand that a Strategic CFO executive search through CFO Recruitment during a transformation period requires a candidate with a proven track record in change management. Our network consists of "deal-hardened" professionals who thrive in high-pressure, transitional environments common to the UK's most ambitious mid-market and enterprise firms.
Specialized Transformation Mandates
Our Strategic Finance & Transformation Recruitment division is structured to support the ten most critical pillars of corporate evolution:1. Post-Merger Integration (PMI) SupportMerging two finance functions is a delicate cultural and technical challenge. We hire leaders who can unify reporting lines, consolidate ledgers, and harmonize team cultures following an acquisition. Our focus is on maintaining business continuity in London and the UK while extracting the synergies promised to the board.2. System Migration Hiring (NetSuite/SAP/Oracle)Technology is the backbone of the modern finance function. We provide the Project Managers and Systems Accountants required for complex migrations. By ensuring your team understands both Official professional accounting standards and the technical stack, we mitigate the risk of data corruption or implementation failure.3. Pre-IPO Finance PreparationThe journey to the public markets requires a radical upgrade in governance and reporting speed. We source the technical FDs and Group Controllers who can build "IPO-ready" finance functions, ensuring compliance with the stringent requirements of the London Stock Exchange.4. Fundraising & VC SupportSecuring capital requires more than just a good pitch; it requires a data-room that stands up to intense scrutiny. We place specialists who specialize in capital-raise readiness, ensuring your financial modeling and historical data are flawless before engaging with investors.5. Cash Flow Optimization & LiquidityIn a high-interest environment, liquidity is king. We hire "Cash-Focused" leaders who can overhaul working capital cycles, renegotiate credit terms, and fix deep-seated liquidity issues for firms across London and the UK.Contact executive search team today to discuss your specific project requirements. Start the Conversation and secure the talent that delivers results.6. Turnaround & RestructuringFor distressed or pivoting businesses, we provide "Turnaround Specialists" capable of managing bank covenants, creditor pressure, and radical cost-reduction programs. These leaders provide the stability needed to steer a business back to profitability.7. Financial Modeling & AnalyticsDecision-making is only as good as the data supporting it. We leverage our Financial planning leadership search network to find modeling experts who can transform raw data into predictive, board-level intelligence.8. Internal Controls & Audit RiskReducing fraud and audit risk is a fundamental requirement of Official UK reporting standards. We place internal control specialists who build robust frameworks to protect the firm's assets and ensure clean year-end audits.9. Budget & Planning (FP&A) TransformationScaling a forecast process requires move from spreadsheets to sophisticated EPM tools. Exit Readiness PlanningPreparing for a sale is a multi-year process. We hire the finance talent needed to maximize valuation, clean up balance sheets, and manage the due diligence process for a successful acquisition or trade sale.
Technical Rigour and National Market Benchmarking
Every transformation professional we place undergoes a technical audit. We are not a generalist agency; we are a specialist partner. Our methodology is built on four pillars of excellence:

Data-Driven Market Mapping: We don't rely on existing databases. We vet every candidate for their "Digital Seniority," ensuring they can lead a modern, tech-enabled finance function.

Cultural Alignment: We prioritise long-term retention. What does a CFO do? Learn about CFO responsibilities, strategic leadership and when businesses hire a Chief Financial Officer.

What Does a CFO Do?

Harper May specialises in CFO recruitment, helping businesses secure senior financial leadership aligned to their structure, growth stage and long-term objectives.A Chief Financial Officer plays a central role in shaping the financial direction of a business, but what that role looks like depends on the stage and complexity of the organisation. For growing businesses, a CFO is often brought in to build financial structure, improve reporting, strengthen controls and introduce greater financial visibility as operations scale. For more established or investment-backed businesses, the role becomes increasingly strategic, focusing on long-term planning, performance tracking, capital allocation and supporting key decisions around funding, transactions and growth. In many organisations, the CFO operates at board level, working closely with senior leadership to guide decision-making, manage risk and ensure the business has clear financial oversight.A CFO typically supports organisations with:

Financial strategy and long-term planning

Improving reporting accuracy and financial visibility

Managing cash flow, funding and capital structure

Strengthening financial controls and governance

Board reporting and stakeholder engagement

Driving performance through financial insight and analysis

Supporting investment, M&A and transaction activity

The scope of the role varies significantly depending on the business, which is why appointing the right CFO at the right time is critical to supporting growth and maintaining financial control.Harper May works with businesses at different stages, from companies hiring their first CFO to organisations requiring more experienced financial leadership to support investment, scaling or transformation. We recruit across a range of sectors including technology, financial services, professional services, consumer businesses and private equity-backed companies, ensuring candidates bring relevant experience aligned to each organisation’s needs. We also support senior finance appointments across:

Finance Directors

Financial Controllers

Heads of Finance

You can also explore our Finance Recruitment services to see how we support businesses hiring across the finance function. If your organisation is looking to hire a CFO, Harper May’s specialist finance recruiters in London can help you identify and secure the right financial leadership for your business.

Fractional CFO vs full-time CFO: understand the key differences, responsibilities and when businesses hire each financial leadership role.

Fractional CFO vs Full-Time CFO

Harper May specialises in CFO recruitment, helping businesses secure the right level of financial leadership based on their structure, growth stage and long-term objectives. Many businesses reach a point where founders, CEOs or leadership teams need to decide between hiring a fractional CFO or appointing a full-time CFO, particularly as financial complexity increases.A fractional CFO, sometimes referred to as a part-time or interim CFO, is typically engaged where a business requires senior financial support without committing to a full-time appointment. This is often relevant for growing businesses where founders or CEOs need to improve reporting, strengthen financial visibility and introduce greater control, but do not yet require a permanent board-level hire.A full-time CFO is usually required once the business reaches a stage where financial complexity, reporting demands and strategic priorities require consistent leadership and oversight. This typically includes businesses preparing for investment, managing funding, scaling operations or requiring ongoing board-level support. The decision between a fractional and full-time CFO is not just about cost or structure, but about ensuring the business has the right level of financial leadership to support its next stage of growth.Appointing a CFO too early can create unnecessary cost, while delaying the hire or relying on insufficient support can lead to gaps in reporting, control and decision-making.Harper May works with businesses at different stages, from those seeking flexible CFO support to organisations ready to hire a full-time CFO to lead finance through growth, investment or transformation. We recruit across a range of sectors including technology, financial services, professional services, consumer businesses and private equity-backed companies. We also support senior finance appointments across:

Chief Financial Officers

Finance Directors

Financial Controllers

Heads of Finance

You can also explore our Finance Recruitment services to see how we support businesses hiring across the finance function. If your organisation is deciding between a fractional CFO or full-time CFO, Harper May’s specialist finance recruiters in London can help you determine the right approach and secure the right financial leadership for your business.

Learn how to choose the right recruitment company for your hiring needs. Harper May shares key factors to consider when selecting a specialist recruitment partner.

How to pick a recruitment company to use

Choosing the right recruitment company can have a direct impact on the quality of candidates you attract and the success of your hiring process. At Harper May, we work with businesses across London and the UK to support finance recruitment, giving us a clear understanding of what separates a strong recruitment partner from the rest.
Choose a specialist recruitment agency
One of the most important factors is whether the recruitment company specialises in your sector or function. A specialist finance recruitment agency will have deeper market knowledge, a stronger network and a clearer understanding of the roles you are hiring for. This is particularly important when hiring senior finance professionals such as CFOs, Finance Directors or Financial Controllers, where both technical expertise and commercial experience are critical.
Assess their candidate network
The best recruitment companies have access to a strong network of candidates, including both active job seekers and passive candidates. Passive candidates are often the most valuable, as they are not actively applying but may be open to the right opportunity.A high-quality recruitment partner should be able to demonstrate how they identify, engage and attract candidates beyond traditional job advertising.
Understand their recruitment process
A structured and well-defined recruitment process is key to securing the right hire. This should include market mapping, targeted search, candidate screening and detailed assessment. The most effective recruitment agencies take the time to understand your business, the role requirements and the long-term objectives behind the hire, rather than simply focusing on filling a vacancy quickly.
Evaluate communication and partnership
Clear and consistent communication is essential throughout the recruitment process. A strong recruitment partner will provide regular updates, honest feedback and insight into the current hiring market. They should also act as an extension of your business, offering guidance on salary expectations, candidate availability and hiring strategy.
Look at experience and track record
A recruitment company’s track record can provide a clear indication of its ability to deliver. Experience in placing candidates in similar roles, along with client testimonials and repeat business, are strong indicators of reliability.Working with an experienced recruitment agency can significantly reduce hiring risk and improve long-term outcomes.
Conclusion
Choosing the right recruitment company is about more than just filling a role. It’s about finding a partner that understands your business, has access to the right talent and can deliver a structured and effective hiring process. You can also explore our Finance Recruitment services to see how we support businesses hiring across the finance function.

How to Pick a Recruitment Company to Use | Harper May

Learn what makes the best recruitment company to use, from specialist expertise and candidate networks to process, communication and long-term hiring value.

What makes the best recruitment company to use?

The best recruitment companies do more than fill vacancies. At Harper May, we work with businesses across London and the UK to support finance recruitment, and we understand that the strongest recruitment partners combine specialist knowledge, market reach and a structured approach to hiring.
Specialist market knowledge
One of the clearest signs of a strong recruitment company is genuine specialism. Agencies that focus on a specific sector or function are usually better placed to understand the technical requirements of a role, the current candidate market and the challenges involved in securing the right hire.In finance recruitment, that means understanding the difference between hiring a CFO, Finance Director, Financial Controller or Head of Finance, and knowing what businesses need at different stages of growth.
Access to the right candidates
The best recruitment companies have access to strong candidate networks, including both active and passive talent. This is often where the real value lies, as many of the strongest candidates are not actively applying for jobs but may be open to the right opportunity.A good recruitment partner should be able to demonstrate how they reach candidates beyond standard advertising channels.
A credible and consistent process
Strong recruitment companies tend to follow a clear and disciplined search process. This usually includes market mapping, targeted outreach, candidate qualification and structured assessment.A consistent process helps improve the quality of shortlisted candidates and reduces the risk of making the wrong hire.
Honest communication
The best agencies are clear, responsive and realistic. They give honest feedback, keep clients updated and provide useful insight into market conditions, salary expectations and candidate availability. That transparency is often what separates a trusted recruitment partner from an agency that simply forwards CVs.
A proven track record
A strong recruitment company should be able to point to relevant experience, repeat business and successful placements. A credible track record shows that the agency can deliver consistently and understands how to support clients over the long term. For many businesses, this is one of the strongest indicators of whether an agency is worth using.
Long-term hiring value
The best recruitment companies are not focused purely on filling a vacancy quickly. They understand the wider business context behind a hire and look for candidates who can make a long-term impact. That means considering not just technical ability, but leadership, commercial awareness and overall fit.
Conclusion
The best recruitment company to use is one that combines specialist expertise, access to high-quality candidates, a structured search process and a strong track record. Choosing the right recruitment partner can improve hiring outcomes and create longer-term value for your business. You can also explore our Finance Recruitment services to see how we support businesses hiring across the finance function.

It is capability.
What This Means for Your Business
As a business scales, finance needs to evolve from operational support to a strategic function.Introducing senior finance leadership ensures that financial planning, reporting, and controls are aligned with growth, complexity, and long-term objectives.Without this progression, businesses often experience reduced visibility, weaker decision-making, and increased financial risk.
Where Harper May Can Help
Our team of specialist finance recruiters in London supports businesses in building finance functions across all levels, aligning capability with growth and complexity.Depending on your requirements, you can explore our:

CFO Recruitment London

Finance Director Recruitment London

Financial Controller Recruitment London

If you are reviewing your finance structure, the next step is understanding what level of support your business requires. You can learn more about our Finance Recruitment services and the finance roles we support across London and the UK.

Signs Your Current Finance Leadership Has Hit a Ceiling

Harper May is a specialist finance recruitment agency based in London, working with businesses as financial complexity increases and leadership requirements evolve. As organisations grow, the demands placed on finance change significantly. What was effective at one stage of growth can become a limitation at the next.At this stage, the challenge is not the finance function itself. It is whether leadership capability is keeping pace with the business.
When Finance Leadership Becomes a Limitation
As businesses scale, finance leadership is expected to move beyond reporting and compliance and play a more strategic role. This includes:

supporting commercial decision-making

delivering forward-looking financial insight

managing financial risk and performance

contributing at board level

When this shift does not happen, finance can begin to restrict growth rather than support it.
Where Finance Starts to Hold the Business Back
As complexity increases, gaps in finance leadership begin to affect performance.Reporting may remain accurate but lack forward-looking insight. Forecasting often becomes less reliable as the business grows.Finance may have limited influence on commercial decisions, reducing its impact on pricing, investment, and growth strategy. Board-level engagement may also become more limited as stakeholder expectations increase. In some cases, businesses begin to rely more heavily on external advisors for strategic financial input. At this point, finance leadership is no longer fully aligned with the needs of the business.
Why Businesses Strengthen Finance Leadership
At this stage, businesses typically introduce more experienced finance leadership to support their next phase of growth. This may involve:

appointing a Chief Financial Officer to lead strategy and investor engagement

upgrading Finance Director capability to operate at board level

Stronger leadership introduces:

more robust financial planning and forecasting

greater visibility over performance and risk

improved commercial decision-making

closer alignment between finance and business strategy

What This Means for Your Business
When finance leadership reaches its ceiling, it often results in slower decision-making, reduced visibility, and missed opportunities.Strengthening leadership ensures that finance supports growth rather than limits it.
Where Harper May Can Help
Our team of specialist finance recruiters in London supports businesses in upgrading finance leadership capability in line with growth, complexity, and strategic requirements.Depending on your requirements, you can explore our:

CFO Recruitment London

Finance Director Recruitment London

If your finance function is no longer keeping pace with your business, the next step is assessing the level of leadership required. You can learn more about our Finance Recruitment services and the finance roles we support across London and the UK.
